Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Exhibition Games

Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Exhibition Games

For the first time ever, the nationally known Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) will be playing exhibition games in our region, and we could not be more honored to take part in this event. WWAST, also known as “America’s Favorite Team,” is comprised of men that have sustained severe injuries resulting in amputation while serving in the military, and through extensive rehabilitation have been restored to competitive athletes once again. These amazing athletes have extraordinary stories to tell, and through exhibition softball games they hope to raise awareness of the sacrifice and resilience of our military. It will be an inspirational event that you cannot miss.

Taking place over Armed Forces Weekend, the proceeds will benefit Operation Welcome Home, a veterans scholarship fund that provides job opportunities for former military personnel at ABCCM’s Veteran’s Restoration Quarters and Transitional housing facility in Swannanoa. This facility is responsible for helping homeless veterans get back on their feet and provide job training to help them re-enter the workforce.

While it is a national organization, the teams competing will be our own local heroes. On Friday, May 17th, McCormick Field will host teams of Asheville and Buncombe County first responders, as well as a special kick-off exhibition featuring local personalities. Henderson County first responder units as well as the Senior Softball League will compete at West Henderson High School on Saturday, May 18th.  This event is a great time to give back to the local heroes and show our appreciation for their sacrifice, so please mark your calendars!
